Just came across an interesting article that cites good practices (I never say “best” because that’s really subjective and based on the environment in which you’re deploying ) for deploying SharePoint 2010 search technologies within the enterprise.  The article focuses on the following:

• Monitoring Latency
• Testing of crawling and querying subsystems
• Antivirus
